Chapter 19: Sonya

The arrivals hall at Pittsburgh International smelled of coffee and floor wax.

Rafferty stood at the barrier at ten to noon with his hands jammed in his coat pockets.

He was as stiff as a man waiting for a verdict.

He had not eaten breakfast, and he had changed his tie twice.

I stood a step behind him and kept quiet.

A trickle of passengers came through the doors, then a rush.

Then came a small figure in an oversized denim jacket, with a canvas duffel over one shoulder.

Her hair was cropped and bleached white, and a tiny silver ring glinted in her nose.

She stopped ten feet away.

Rafferty did not move.

I realized he was afraid that if he took one step, she would turn around.

"You've got a new coat," Sonya said.

"Gran bought it."

"It's horrible."

"I know."

She looked at him for a long moment, her green eyes narrowed in a freckled face.

"You're about to cry," she said.
