Chapter 29: The Loading Dock
I didn't move out of his way.
I don't know why.
He didn't.
He hit me with his shoulder.
I went sideways into the wall and the swinging doors banged open, and he was through them.
Then I was through them too.
The kitchen was full.
Lunch service for three hundred, every burner going, the ovens open, steam everywhere.
Twenty people in black and white turned around at once.
Leonard went down the middle of the line in his camel coat, shoving.
A stack of plates went over and exploded on the tile.
"The dock," somebody shouted. "He's going for the dock."
His gray sedan would be in the staff lot.
I ran.
My pharmacy flats slid in something wet, and I caught myself on the steel pass and kept going.
He was past the dish pit.
He was past pastry, where Chloe's croissants sat cooling on the racks.
He was almost at the back corridor.
Then he looked over his shoulder and saw me coming.
Something changed in his face.
He stopped running.
Beside him stood one of the tall rolling racks we use for sheet pans, twenty shelves high.
