Chapter 33: Christmas Eve
"Did his lawyer give it to him?" I said.
"His lawyer doesn't have it," the detective said. "Neither do I. Do you?"
"No."
"Then let's keep it that way."
She hung up.
I sat on the stage steps with the phone in my lap while the florists argued about pine.
Then I called Kendrick.
It went to voicemail, the way it had every night for three weeks.
This time I left a message.
"Leonard is out," I said. "Two million cash. He asked for your address on the courthouse steps."
"I don't know where you are. I'm glad I don't. Lock your door."
I almost hung up.
"Call me back," I said. "Just once. Just so I know."
He didn't call back.
Christmas Eve came in with snow.
My father had held the candlelight dinner in the Glasshouse every year since I was born.
Two hundred guests, long tables, no electric light at all.
Only candles, hundreds of them, in glass jars down every table and along every ledge.
When I was small, he let me light the first one.
This year I lit it myself, at six, with nobody watching.
