Chapter 8: Patience

I did not tell Rhys where I was going.

I knew that broke his first rule.

I took the bus on my half day off and got down at Wincott Dock Holdings, a glass building at the end of the quay with the Wincott name over the doors.

"Do you have an appointment?" the woman at the desk asked.

I held up the card.

She read it, and her face changed, and she sent me up.

Gareth stood at the window of a corner office with the harbor behind him.

He turned when I came in.

"The girl from Garraty's," he said. "I hoped you'd come."

"Did you?"

"I couldn't sleep. I kept seeing your face at that table." He pulled out a chair for me. "Sit, please. Tell me what you need. Lavinia is hard on staff, and I'm ashamed I didn't see it."

"I don't need a job."

I took the chain from around my neck and unhooked the ring.

I put it in his hand.

He looked at it, and I watched his whole face go slack.

He turned it over with his thumb.

Inside the band were tiny letters.

"G to A," he read, in a thin voice. "Patience."

"That's what it says."

"I had it made at a shop on Fennel Row. I had it cut for her the week before the wedding. She put it on a chain because her mother's rings were too big for her." He lowered himself into a chair. "Where did you get this?"

"My mother put it in a crate with me when I was two."

He did not move.

"She was in a freight container, and then in the mines. She gave birth to me there. Her name was Adela Lorrimer, and she didn't run from you. She never left that hall on her own legs."

"No."

"Mr. Wincott, I'm your daughter."

He said nothing for a long time.
