Chapter 16: The Term Sheet
At nine on Thursday morning, my mother found a handyman in her boardroom.
He came in last, in his canvas jacket and his leather tool belt, and he took the chair beside the door.
He did not sit at the walnut table.
My mother stopped halfway through a sentence to the lawyer.
"Kasey," she said. "Remove that man."
"He's with me."
"He is with the Huddleston matter in the way a mop is with a spill."
Landon laughed, easy and rested, with a leather closing binder under his hand.
"Rudd," he said. "Did you bring my fifty back? I haven't seen you spend it."
"I'm still thinking about it," Elias said.
The man from the bank checked his watch.
"Mrs. Haverkamp, we have until noon," he said. "Is there a wire?"
"Hartwell funds at noon," said Landon. "The minute the Haverkamp women sign."
"They won't," I said.
My mother turned the full lacquer of her smile on me.
"Then you have three hours to explain to two hundred and twelve families."
The door opened behind Elias.
