Chapter 17: Her Turn With the Belt

Armand wiped his mouth and looked at me for a long time.

Then he looked at the notebook in my hand, and at the three men still standing in my room.

"Go and make coffee," he said to them. "All of you. Shut the door."

Nobody argued.

Dominique went last. He stopped in the doorway, caught my eye, and left it open an inch.

I did not know what Armand meant to do.

"You asked me to hear what you do not say," he said. "I have been counting your breaths for a week. May I say what I counted?"

"Yes."

"When I spank you, you cry out. When Auguste hits you, you laugh. When Léon puts a collar on you, you go quiet and soft."

"Yes."

"And three times you have looked at my hands."

I held very still.

"Not at what they were doing to you. At the belt. At the hairbrush on the dresser. At the way I hold my own wrist when I am about to strike."

"You noticed."

"You want to be the one holding it."

My face went hot, and I could not make myself say yes.

I nodded.

He sat down on the edge of my bed and began to undo his shirt.

"Term four," he said. "No marks above the collar. I broke it in the rope, with the cord, and I took the blame for it, and you let me. A man who breaks a rule pays for it."

"Armand..."

"Pay is mine. Take your price."

He took off the shirt and folded it on the chair.

His back was long, pale and unmarked, with a scatter of grey hair at the shoulders.

He lay face down on my quilt with his arms folded under his head.

"Belt," he said. "The black one, on the door. Do it the way you have wanted to since Tuesday."

I took the belt off its hook.
