Chapter 6: Nothing Under the Apron

On Thursday night the bar was full.

Students filled the front tables, two couples shared a bottle of Beaujolais by the window, and a man in a rugby shirt was arguing with his friend about football.

I carried trays through all of it in my black uniform dress and my white apron, with nothing underneath.

Every step, the fabric brushed my bare nipples.

Every time I bent over a table, I thought of the cool air on my skin and felt my face go hot.

My ass was still tender, and the dress rubbed it with each stride.

Nobody looked at me twice.

That was the part that made my heart pound.

At ten, Léon nodded at me from behind the bar.

"Back room," he said. "They're asking for the Pomerol."

I took the bottle and four glasses and walked down the narrow corridor, past the toilets, to the door with the brass handle.

The four of them were already at the table.

Cards lay in fans in front of Dominique and Auguste, and Armand had a pencil behind his ear.

Léon came in behind me and closed the door, leaving it unlocked.

"Pour," Auguste said.

I leaned across the felt and poured the wine.

My dress gaped at the neckline, and Dominique's eyes went straight to what was under it.

"Nothing underneath," he said mildly. "As instructed."

"Yes."

"Show us."

"Here? The door isn't locked."

"No," said Armand. "It isn't."

I understood then.

The bar was loud and crowded, and anyone could open that door.

My knees almost gave out.

I set the bottle down and, with fingers I could barely feel, undid the three buttons at the front of my dress.

I held the sides apart.

Four men looked at my naked body in the lamplight, and the only sound was the muffled roar of the bar beyond the wall.

"Turn around," said Auguste.

I turned, and the dress slid off my shoulders to my elbows.

"Come here," said Dominique.

I walked to his chair.

He put his hand between my thighs, palm up, and cupped me.
