Chapter 13: Keene Events

Keene Events had the second floor of a brick building on Mercer Street, with glass walls and a white sofa nobody sat on.

Allie came with me in her street clothes, carrying a small white box from the restaurant.

The restaurant had boxed the dessert anyway, the one that was meant for our anniversary, and left it at the Linden Street door with a note.

Hope the next occasion is a good one.

A dozen people sat at desks behind the glass, and they all looked up when I walked in.

"Can I help you?" said the receptionist, a girl of about twenty-two with a headset on.

"I'm Cora Oxley. I'd like to see Sabrina."

The girl's eyes went to the glass office at the back.

"One moment," she said.

Sabrina came out before the moment was over.

She wore a cream suit and her hair was pinned up, and she held out both hands as if I had come for lunch.

"Cora. What a surprise. Come in, come in."

"Here is fine," I said.

"Oh, honey, you shouldn't be standing. In your condition."

"Then I'll sit." I put the white box on the receptionist's desk and took the chair next to it.

Allie stayed on her feet behind me.

Everyone at the desks had stopped pretending to type.

"What's that?" Sabrina said, looking at the box.

"Dessert from the dinner I planned for Saturday," I said. "It had a candle in it, and a card for Ross that said he was going to be a father."
