Chapter 4: The Hundred Thousand
The house on Linden Street was the one Elliott had drawn himself, in the first year, on the kitchen table of their rented apartment.
He parked across the road on Sunday afternoon and sat there with the engine off.
He only wanted his drafting set.
It was a walnut case with brass corners, and Marin had given it to him on their first anniversary with a card that said, For the man who builds me a home.
He let himself in with his key.
The hall smelled of her candles, and a man's voice was coming from the kitchen.
"Come in, Elliott," Russ called. "I've been expecting you."
Russ Slater sat at the head of the kitchen table with a mug of Elliott's coffee.
He had a leather folder open in front of him and a pen laid neatly across it.
"You can't be in my house," Elliott said.
"Ms. Granger's house, technically. Your name isn't on the deed, and I'd hate for that to become the first thing a lawyer says to you."
Elliott stood in the doorway and said nothing.
"Sit. Please."
"I'll stand."
"Suit yourself." Russ turned the folder around and slid it over the table. "This is the easy way."
Elliott looked down.
It was a check for one hundred thousand dollars, written to him and already signed.
Under it lay a three-page agreement.
"Quiet until the album cycle ends," Russ said. "Fourteen months. You don't speak to the press, you don't file anything, and you don't mention the marriage. After that, we'll make an announcement together and everyone is happy."
