Chapter 8: One Office
It was raining on Thursday when Elliott met Hannah on the steps of the county courthouse.
She stood under the stone overhang in a plain green raincoat, with the grey binder held against her chest.
She was out of uniform, and she looked younger, and a little nervous.
"You didn't have to meet me in public," Elliott said.
"It's the only place nobody asks why we're talking." She nodded at the doors. "Courthouse steps. Everyone assumes you're getting a license or a lawyer."
"Which am I getting?"
"The second one, I hope."
She opened the binder against her arm so the rain would not touch it.
"I went through all hundred and ninety-eight reports again on my own time," she said. "Every one of them came in through the same line."
"Slater Artist Management."
"Not only the name. The phone line. The same number, the same voice, every time."
"Whoever calls it in sounds friendly and quick."
"And gives the exact spot where you'll be standing."
Elliott frowned.
"The exact spot."
"At the Ardmore it's always the side door, and at the other venues it's the stage door or the loading dock."
"Always where she asked you to wait."
She lifted her eyes to his.
"Elliott, who told them where you'd be?"
He could not answer.
He stood on the wet stone and heard Marin's voice in his head, patient and gentle, saying, Not in the car park, the car park has cameras.
"Nobody," he said slowly. "Nobody knew."
"Somebody knew."
"Marin asked me to wait there."
"I'm sorry," Hannah said.
"Don't be."
"I'd rather be wrong."
"You're not wrong." His voice sounded strange to him. "I think I've known for a while. I just didn't want to count it."
