Chapter 10: The Page on the Table

I started to laugh and it turned into something else halfway out.

Jericho took my bag out of my hand and set it on the floor.

Then he took me by the shoulders and walked me inside.

His loft was up an iron staircase above the old mill floor.

It was one huge room of brick and black beams with a river in every window.

There was a kitchen at one end and a bed at the other, and between them an enormous sagging couch the color of weak tea.

He put me on the couch and went to the kitchen.

I heard a kettle.

He came back with a mug and a grey sweatshirt that came down to my knees.

I pulled it on over my blouse and held the tea in both hands.

It was English breakfast.

"Dot gave me a tin," he said.

I almost laughed again.

I told him everything about the study, my father's face, the badge on the desk, the way I had waited for a single word.

He listened without interrupting and without looking away, sitting on the coffee table with his elbows on his knees.

When I stopped, he was quiet for a moment.

"He should have said something," he said.

"He's afraid."

"That doesn't make it your fault."

"I know."

I set the mug down.

"Now tell me," I said. "Why you came."

He stood.

He crossed the room to a desk under the window and took a legal pad and a black pen from a drawer.

He stood with his back to me for a long minute.

I watched his shoulders.

Then he came back and laid the pad on the table in front of me.
