Chapter 17: The Bait
"Tell him IT hasn't sent the code," I said into the phone. "Make him wait till Thursday."
"Why Thursday?" Dot said.
"Because on Tuesday I'm going to lose."
On Tuesday morning I stood outside Lab 4 with red eyes and no badge, in the glass corridor where I had once cut a ribbon.
The door would not open for me.
Cameron found me there at nine.
He had Daphne on his arm, in a cream coat and sunglasses, with her cheek turned so I could not see her face.
"Thal," he said. "You look terrible."
"I know."
"Our chemist ran your notebook last week."
He said it softly.
"The batch fails, and the four of us know it. So you will bring me the real one by Friday, or the board hears who sold a dud."
"Oh," I said.
I let my face crumple.
It was not hard, after the week I'd had.
"Oh, Cameron, I'm so sorry."
"You gave my sister a fake."
"I was scared!" My voice cracked in the empty corridor. "She wanted it so badly, and you wanted it, and Daddy wouldn't listen."
