Chapter 15: Remission
I went down the stairs with my dress buttoned wrong.
Rhett came behind me, barefoot, with his shirt on inside out.
Clifton looked at the two of us under the streetlight.
He did not say anything about it, which was new.
"Her oncology clinic," he said. "Eight o'clock tomorrow. She has her appointment."
"Then she can keep it," Rhett said.
"You say she's lying about the cancer. Say it in front of her doctor."
He held up the folder.
"She signed a release in January. It lets her doctor talk to me about her care. It's in here."
"Why are you showing us?" I asked.
"Because I'm tired of hearing it from you." His voice cracked.
"I'm going to be right, Autumn. And then you can both apologize."
I looked at Rhett.
He gave me a small nod.
"We'll be there," I said.
The waiting room on Brook Street was full at eight, with every chair taken and a television murmuring in the corner.
Lydia was already there.
She sat by the window in a gray sweater with her hair in a long braid.
She went white when she saw the three of us walk in together.
"Clifton," she said. "What did you do?"
"I'm fixing it."
"You said we'd go in quietly."
"We are going in."
He walked to the front desk and put the folder on it.
"I'd like to speak to Ms. Vandermeer's doctor. Here is her signed release."
The receptionist read it and picked up a phone.
