Chapter 7: Her Own Money
I stepped into the hallway and pulled the door shut behind me.
"Put the pen away, Ty."
He looked at the pen, then slid it into his jacket pocket.
"Mom's in the car," he said. "She wanted to come up, but I told her I'd talk to you first."
"That was smart."
"She's really upset, Autumn."
"I'm sure she is."
I leaned on the wall beside my friend's door, and the baby shifted under my ribs.
"When did Clifton tell you about the dress?" I asked.
Tyler's ears went red.
"What?"
"The dress. Lydia wearing it. When did you find out?"
He studied the floor.
"Two days ago. He said it was a kindness. He said you'd be hurt for an hour and then you'd understand."
"And you said?"
"I said okay."
"Why?"
"Because he said he'd pay off the car."
I let that sit in the stairwell between us.
He was twenty-two years old, and he had my father's careful hands and my mother's chin.
"How much did Dad's first surgery cost, the one before the heart?" I asked.
"I don't know."
"Twenty-three thousand. I paid eleven of it. Do you know what I did the summer you started college?"
"Autumn."
"I taught summer school and tutored in the evenings and sold my grandmother's cedar chest. I paid your first semester in cash, because Mom said we couldn't ask Dad's insurance to cover it."
"I know."
"You don't know," I said. "You never asked."
His face crumpled a little.
"I didn't think it was a big deal," he said. "Clifton just offered. It was like the money was always there."
"It was always there because it was mine."
