Chapter 16: Gala Ticket
The caterer's van smelled of lemons and floor wax.
At six on Tuesday I stood in the loading alley behind the Collier Foundation.
I wore a white jacket two sizes wrong and a black tie knotted by Jo's hands.
She had done it in the car without a word.
Then she had pressed her forehead to mine for a moment.
"Come out," she said. "I won't say it again."
"You said it already."
"I'm saying it with my whole face."
An agent in the driver's seat gave me an earpiece the size of a grain of rice.
"Ellen's voice, my voice, nobody else's," she said. "If you hear a click, run."
"Where?"
"Anywhere that isn't up."
A head waiter with a clipboard and no patience waved the line of us inside.
"Trays by the sink. Don't talk to the guests. Don't make eye contact. Don't drop anything."
"Is this your first event?" said the man beside me.
"Yes."
"Good luck. Nobody looks at us anyway."
That, I thought, was the oldest joke I knew.
