Chapter 19: What I Won't Sell
I carried Hugh's letter to Southwark in my glove and did not read it again.
My mother was in the yard with her sleeves up, scrubbing the pump trough with a brick.
"Well?" she said, without turning round.
I gave her the letter.
She read it with her lips moving, the way she reads everything, and folded it very small.
"He's bought the ground," she said.
"Under my feet."
"In my own name."
"For the court."
"I can't write my own name to a deed," said my mother.
"You can make your mark."
"I'll make it with a flat iron, if I have to."
She gave a short, hard laugh and went back to the brick.
That was when the carriage with the matched greys turned in at the gate.
The Earl got down himself.
He came across the cobbles with his cane, followed by his solicitor, who carried a leather case and looked sick.
Every door in the court opened a hand's width, and every face that could see him did.
