Chapter 10: Blind
Roman shut the office door, and locked it, and Jamie said, "You let me sign blind."
He had been holding it for ten weeks, and it came out low and clean and hard.
Roman stood with his hand still on the lock.
The office was huge, with a desk the size of a car and a wall of framed posters.
The late sun came in sideways over a hundred years of Aldecott films.
"Not now," Roman said.
"Yes, now. Your aunt just called me a coin in a well in front of forty people. I want to know what else I haven't been told."
"Jamie..."
"You knew what page forty-one was."
"Yes."
"You had it changed the night before. You had your lawyer put his hand on it so I couldn't see. And then you read it out in your hallway like a sentence, and I was standing there with a debt notice buzzing on my leg, and you watched me say yes."
"I did."
"That's all? You did?"
"I did," Roman said again.
His face was grey.
He did not move from the door, and he did not try to explain, and that was worse.
"What kind of man does that to a stranger?" Jamie said. His voice shook. "Do you know what I thought you were? When I walked into that house? I thought, *he's a monster, he'll never touch me twice.* And you've been so careful. You cook for me. You put your hand on my neck. And I keep thinking, what does he know that I don't?"
"Don't ask me that."
"I'm asking."
"Don't. Not yet."
Jamie crossed the room and shoved him in the chest.
Roman didn't give an inch.
"Fight back, then," Jamie said. "Say something. Do something."
Roman looked down at him.
His eyes were dark, and the muscle was jumping in his jaw.
"What do you want me to do?"
"I want to hit you."
"Do it."
"I don't want to hit you. I want," Jamie said, and heard his own voice break, "I want you to stop looking at me like I'm the one who has to be handled."
