Chapter 13: Say It Out Loud
The kitchen light was on, and Jamie pointed at the nearest stool.
"Sit."
"Hendry..."
"Jamie. You've said it four times today. You don't get to take it back now."
Roman sat.
He sat on the stool at the marble island with his hands on his thighs.
His big shoulders came a little forward.
Jamie stayed on his feet, because it was the only way he could stay angry.
"The whole truth," he said. "From the start. Don't make it shorter to be kind."
"All right."
"And don't look at the wall."
Roman looked at him.
"My father's will put the studio in a trust," he said. "Article Nine has been in it since before I was born."
"Your aunt read me that part."
"She didn't read you the other half. If I don't have an heir by my fortieth birthday, my shares go to her son."
"You'd lose the studio."
"I'd lose the studio, and I didn't care about that. I cared that she'd have the child anyway."
Jamie folded his arms over the small round of his belly.
"Go on."
"I picked an agency in the spring. I read your file in April. A nursing student, a dead mother, a debt, no family to come asking questions."
"That's the nicest thing anyone has said about me all week."
"I thought it was a kind of luck. Then I read your file again, and your photograph was in it, and I couldn't make myself sign the order."
"You signed it."
"Dennis found Article Nine in the trust the night before you came," Roman said. "I'd never read that clause. I hadn't known she could do it."
His hands closed on his knees.
"I sat in my study until three. I thought of three ways to stop her. Two of them were illegal, and the third was a bond."
"So you wrote it in."
"I wrote it on the last page myself, in pen, and made Dennis type it up. I had no time to ask you. I had no right to ask you. You'd have torn it into confetti, and you'd have been right."
