Chapter 18: The Trustee
Roman Aldecott had walked into this boardroom for nine years, and he had never once wanted to be somewhere else.
He wanted it now.
He stood in the lobby of the Aldecott Pictures tower with his hand on the back of Jamie's neck.
The bond ran hot and anxious between them.
"One hour," he said.
"One hour," Jamie said. "Dennis has my crackers."
"I have his crackers," Dennis said, from the bench, with a paper bag on his knee.
"If anything happens, you press the button on your phone."
"What button?"
"I installed one."
"Roman."
"I'll be fine," Roman said, which was the first lie he had told in weeks.
He bent his head and kissed Jamie's temple in front of the receptionist and two guards.
Every one of them looked at the floor.
He took the elevator up alone.
The boardroom on the fourth floor had a table for twenty and nine chairs filled.
At the head of it, Constance's chair sat empty with her glasses folded on the blotter.
He had expected her to come herself.
The head of the board, a heavy old man with a tremor in one hand, cleared his throat before Roman had sat down.
"Mr. Aldecott. The chair sends her regrets. She has asked me to read a letter into the record."
"Read it."
"It's addressed to you personally, but she insists..."
"Read it."
The old man unfolded a single sheet.
He read it in the flat voice of a person walking over thin ice.
"*Roman. The terms I will accept are these. At the birth of the child, the carrier is paid ten million dollars out of the Trust, in addition to the contract, and is released from the property. He signs a waiver of all claim. The child is raised under my guardianship, in the family house, with you as a regular visitor.*"
