Chapter 21: Forty Weeks
It was not the one.
The tight band came and went for two weeks, on the stairs, in the kitchen, in the middle of a sentence.
The obstetrician said the word *practice* in a calm beta voice and sent them home each time.
Roman bought a stopwatch.
He kept it in his shirt pocket, and he clicked it so often that Jamie finally took it away and hid it in the freezer.
"I need it," Roman said.
"You need a hobby."
"I've got one. It's you."
On the Thursday of week forty, at ten past four in the morning, Jamie woke in the nest.
A pain like a hand was closing round his spine.
He lay still.
It built, and peaked, and he breathed through his teeth the way the class had taught him.
It let go.
He turned his head.
Roman was awake, propped on an elbow, with the stopwatch in his hand.
"You found it," Jamie said.
"It was in the ice."
"You went through the freezer in your sleep."
"Ten minutes," Roman said, ignoring this. "Since the last one that woke me. That was four. That's less than five. That's the number."
"That's the number."
"We go."
"We go," Jamie agreed, and the next one took his breath.
The bag had been packed since week thirty-two.
Roman put it in the car.
The car seat in the car.
Jamie in the car, and himself behind the wheel, and made the forty-one-minute drive to East LA in twenty-three.
He took the corners.
