Chapter 13: Nine Weeks, One Day
Friday at five came and went.
At 5:01 my attorney called.
"Nothing," she said. "His lawyer says he won't sign. He says his client wants to save the marriage."
"His client reposted a baby."
"I mentioned that."
At 5:20 Cory texted me himself.
"Not signing. I'm not giving up on us. Your grandma's sewing box is still in the garage. Come get it tomorrow at 2. We should talk."
It was the last thing of mine in that house.
At two o'clock on Saturday there were cars parked down both sides of Maple Glen Court.
There were pink and blue balloons tied to the mailbox.
There was a sign staked in the front lawn, white letters on a pink board.
"Oh Baby! The Joke's On Us!"
I sat in my car and read it twice.
The garage door was open.
My grandmother's sewing box sat on the shelf by the freezer, under a case of sparkling water.
I lifted it free.
"Ren!"
Cory was in the side doorway to the yard in a pale blue linen shirt with a beer in his hand.
"You came," he said. "Come say hi. Everybody's out back."
