Chapter 17: The Clause
I didn't take the envelope.
"Bring it to my attorney," I said. "Thursday. Both of us in the room."
"Ren, I'm offering you everything."
"You're offering me everything except the only thing I asked to keep."
I shut the door on him.
I locked it.
Then I sat on the bottom stair in the dark with the mug in my lap until my hands stopped shaking.
My attorney's office was on the nineteenth floor of a glass tower in downtown Columbus.
Cory came with his attorney, a heavy man in a striped tie who called me "Mrs. Ritter" three times before my attorney corrected him.
My attorney was small and gray-haired and wore reading glasses on a beaded chain.
She'd seen the cafeteria video.
She slid the settlement across the table to me with the highlighted paragraph on top.
"This is the only change," Cory's attorney said. "Mr. Ritter is prepared to sign today. No reconciliation period. Your client keeps her vehicle, her retirement account and her maiden name."
"And she never speaks to his son," my attorney said.
