Chapter 20: Off Script
The theater didn't make a sound.
Nine hundred people, and I could hear the air conditioning.
Stacy laughed into her headset, high and bright.
"Okay! He's been rehearsing a bit. Callen, baby, read your card."
Callen didn't take it out of his pocket.
His hands were shaking. I could see it from the front row.
He held onto the mic stand with both of them.
"I don't want to be filmed anymore," he said. "And the test was real. Mom took it that morning."
That was all.
Two sentences.
He stepped back from the mic.
Somewhere in the balcony, someone said, "What?"
Stacy stood up off the couch.
She was still smiling, but the smile had nothing behind it.
"He's twelve," she said to the crowd. "He gets confused. He's been spending way too much time with certain people." She laughed again, the laugh Callen had told me about in the car. Her scared laugh. "Kids, right?"
Nobody laughed with her.
I stood up.
The mic stand was right there, two feet from my knee.
