Chapter 4: Room 412

Heath rode in the ambulance and left me standing on the club steps with his mother.

"Well," she said. "That's the end of that, I suppose."

She meant me.

I took a cab to Port Hollis General and sat in the waiting room for two hours with a vending machine coffee.

My phone buzzed.

*Heath: I'm so sorry. She has nobody. Her parents are out of town. Please don't be upset.*

I looked at it for a long while.

Last time, I had called him forty times from the club steps.

*Me: I'm not upset. Stay with her. I'll bring you dinner later.*

I sent it and watched the panel.

*AFFECTION: 58%.*

I put my head back against the wall.

Every kindness I did made the number rise, and every time Frankie got close to him it fell.

I did not know what any of it meant, and I knew that I had to find out.

At four o'clock Heath came out of the double doors with a paper cup in each hand.

His shirt was wrinkled, and his eyes were red.

"She's awake," he said. "They're keeping her overnight. The fever broke by itself, and nobody knows why."

"That's good."

"She wants to talk to you."

I stared at him.

"To me?"

"She asked for you by name. She said, get Ainsley, alone." He rubbed his face. "I don't know what's going on with you two. I don't want to know. Just go."

He pressed a coffee into my hand, kissed my forehead, and dropped into a plastic chair as if his legs had gone.

*AFFECTION: 61%.*

I walked down the hallway to room 412.

Frankie lay propped on three pillows with an IV in her arm and her short hair flat against her skull.
