Chapter 19: Seven to One
The board met on Friday at ten, in a room with a long table and a view of the harbor.
Perrin was not supposed to be there.
He sat in the back row of chairs along the wall, in the navy suit, with Biscuit's ear sticking out of his breast pocket.
He had not meant to bring the otter.
He had put it in his pocket without thinking, and Malcolm had seen it and said nothing.
Eight directors sat around the table.
Malcolm stood at one end, alone, in a gray suit and the blue silk tie.
Desmond sat at the other with a folder and a pleasant, patient face.
"The motion before the board," the secretary said, "is to remove Malcolm Dearborn as chairman and chief executive of Dearborn Harbor Freight. Mr. Kerr, you have the floor."
Desmond rose.
He spoke for ten minutes, soft and reasonable, and he never once raised his voice.
He spoke of the company's difficult year, of a pattern of judgment, of the strain of a long grief.
