Chapter 23: Bedtime
Malcolm's thirty-fifth birthday fell on a Tuesday in the first week of December.
He came home at six with snow on his shoulders and found the house dark.
"Perrin?" he called.
"In here."
The voice came from the living room.
Malcolm hung up his coat and walked in.
The gray sofa that nobody had ever sat on was draped in a patchwork quilt, and every lamp in the room was lit.
A small cake sat on the coffee table with one candle in it, slightly crooked.
Perrin stood beside the cake in a soft green sweater, with his hands behind his back.
He was not small tonight.
Malcolm could see it in the set of his shoulders and the steady green of his eyes.
He was entirely himself, and entirely in charge.
"Happy birthday," Perrin said.
"You didn't have to."
"I asked Bernie if I could. She said yes." He nodded at the sofa. "Sit."
Malcolm sat.
The sofa was deeper than he'd expected.
Perrin lit the candle with a kitchen match and held out a mug of hot chocolate, and Malcolm took it with both hands.
"Make a wish," Perrin said.
"I've got everything."
