Chapter 14: The Bean Vote
By tradition the heir and the person he wanted to marry waited in the corridor while the trustees voted.
By tradition the staff were not in the corridor.
At noon the corridor outside the library held the whole staff, a taxi driver and my sister.
The cook stood nearest the door with her ear flat to the wood.
The groundskeeper had written a pool on the back of a feed-store receipt.
"Three to nothing white, a dollar," he said. "Two to one white, five. Anything with black in it, ten."
"Why is black ten?" Holly asked, through an apple.
"Nobody's seen it in ninety years," the groundskeeper said.
"I'll take white-white-black," Holly said. "It's the only one with a plot."
The taxi driver had come in from the gate to see how it ended.
He put ten dollars on three to nothing black and nobody asked him why.
Arthur stood against the wall with his hands in his pockets.
I stood beside him and kept my eyes on the door.
