Chapter 16: The Offer

Laura's POV

Winifred laid her counteroffer on the lid of the Poor Box, one cream card at a time.

Arthur had found me on the back steps with Holly and a granola bar, and he had not been allowed to say a word since.

"You may sit in," I told him. "You hold the toaster. You're on probation."

Winifred handed it to him without comment, and he held it.

"You are confirmed," Winifred said, in the front hall, beside the empty bread basket.

"The Fund protects the family of a confirmed spouse. I intend to be generous."

She turned over the first card.

DEBT FORGIVEN, it said, and under it, $186,200, struck through in black.

"No," I said.

"You have not heard the second card."

"I don't need the second card for that one," I said. "A forgiven debt is a gift."

"I know what I owe on a gift. Mom thanked a man for a year over a gas bill."

Arthur opened his mouth.

I reached over and pressed the lever of the toaster in his arms.

It went down with a click, and he shut his mouth.
