Chapter 15: Simon's POV
Simon's POV
Clara wanted to go to Mass, and I could not talk her out of it.
"She's calling me an adulteress in front of the whole parish," she said on Sunday morning. "I'm not sitting in your gatehouse while she does it."
So we went.
We sat in the last pew at Saint Brigid's, on the aisle, with her hand tucked in the crook of my arm.
Joan sat in the front row between her two sisters.
Her cardigan was buttoned to the throat, and she held a rosary in both hands.
Kyle sat at the end of the pew in his good suit.
He had not slept.
I could tell from the back of the church, by how he held his neck.
Brooke was not with them.
Brooke was in the blue room on Wren Hill, eating toast, with a lawyer's card propped against her teacup.
The old priest said the readings and gave a short homily about forgiveness.
He did not look at the back of the church once, which told me he knew exactly who was in it.
Then came the prayers of the faithful.
Joan rose from the front pew.
"Father, may I?" she said.
She did not wait for an answer.
"I'd ask the parish to pray for my daughter-in-law," Joan said, and her voice broke on the word. "She has strayed, and I'm afraid she's been led astray."
A murmur went through the pews.
Heads turned to look at the back.
I felt Clara go still.
"She has been seen with a man who has no right to her," Joan said. "I only want her home. I love that girl."
She pressed a handkerchief to her mouth.
"And I'd ask you to ask yourselves," she went on, lower, "why a stranger from a big house on Wren Hill should be so very kind to a married woman."
