Chapter 10: Five Thousand a Month

We read the statements at my kitchen table, side by side, with Camila asleep in the crib behind us.

The bank had printed thirty-one months on forty pages.

Emiliano went through them with a yellow highlighter, and I watched his hand move down the margin.

My father's house had sold for two hundred and ninety thousand dollars.

His savings and his life insurance made the total a little over six hundred thousand.

All of it had gone into the trust.

The trust was meant to pay me five thousand dollars on the first of every month until I turned thirty-five.

I had been twenty-two when he died.

I had sat in a lawyer's office that Soledad's friend picked, and been told there was nothing left.

I had thanked them for being kind.

"First draw is the month after the wedding," Emiliano said. "Five thousand to the Aldama household account. Second draw, same. Thirty-one draws."

"A hundred and fifty-five thousand dollars," I said.

He didn't ask how I'd done the math so fast.

I had been counting money for three years.

"The household account pays the bank pouch," he said. "I called a friend in operations this afternoon. Every month the pouch goes out with ten envelopes and one forty-dollar bill inside it."
