Chapter 6: The Hearing
Alma's POV
The hearing was set for nine o'clock on a Tuesday, eleven days after I walked out.
Camila was fourteen days old, and the courthouse had no place to warm a bottle.
A deputy at the metal detector let me do it in the security office with a kettle.
"First baby?" she asked.
"Yes."
"You're doing fine," she said, and I held on to that sentence all the way up the elevator.
Rodrigo was already in the courtroom.
He sat at the table across the aisle in the grey funeral suit, and he did not look at me when I came in.
Soledad sat behind him in the front row, in pearls and a black dress.
Their lawyer was a tall man with a silver pen, and he stood up before the judge had finished sitting down.
"Your Honor, this is a case about stability," he said. "A young mother with no income, no residence and a pattern of public outbursts has taken a newborn from her home."
"She has a residence," Emiliano said, without standing. "She has a friend's couch and a rental application. He cut off her cards."
"Mr. Cardenas, you'll have your turn," the judge said.
The tall lawyer played the video.
It was the bakery.
I watched myself on the courtroom screen, setting ten brown envelopes on a glass case, with my voice saying Pick one.
"This is a woman using a public humiliation to extract money from a man at his lowest moment," the lawyer said. "She staged a performance. She has done it before. She did it at a family dinner."
He had another video.
It was the dinner.
The cousin had posted it to the group chat after all, and I watched it from above, myself with a baby on my chest, tearing envelopes open one after another.
The room could hear Soledad say, She'll be back by Friday.
