Chapter 11: The Wife Dances
Pippa came home with us on Saturday.
She walked out of the hospital on her own two feet.
She had a plastic bag of pills and a scar she was very proud of.
Rafferty drove, and he did not let her carry anything.
"I can carry a tote bag," she said from the back seat.
"No," Rafferty said.
"It weighs two pounds."
"No."
"He's bossy," she told me. "I like it."
In the penthouse she turned in a slow circle in the middle of the living room.
"This is where you live?"
"For now."
"I've been in this city twenty years, and I never knew people lived like this."
"Neither did I," I said.
Rafferty showed her the guest room on the second floor, next to mine.
She flopped across the bed and looked up at him.
"So you're my brother-in-law."
"I suppose so."
"Do you cook?"
"Badly."
"Do you dance?"
"No."
"Good," she said. "My sister dances enough for both of you."
She had no idea what she had said.
I felt my face go hot, and Rafferty looked at the ceiling with great attention.
Pippa looked from one of us to the other.
"What?"
"Nothing," I said. "Go to sleep."
She slept for six hours.
In the evening she ate half a bowl of soup and told Rafferty about the nurses.
He listened to every word of it.
She made him laugh twice.
When she went to bed at nine, she hugged him around the middle without asking.
He stood with his arms half raised, and then he patted her back.
"Goodnight, Pippa."
"Goodnight, hot boss."
I put her to bed and turned off the light.
When I came back downstairs, he was at the kitchen island with his sleeves rolled up.
A glass of water stood in front of him.
He looked tired and very serious.
"I have to tell you something," he said.
"All right."
"I should have told you Sunday."
He told me about the shell company called Larkin Street Holdings, and the club that belonged to it.
He told me about the form with the assistant's signature.
