Chapter 15: His Father's Drawer
Rafferty's POV
I closed every blind in the penthouse before dawn, and then I went to work.
My father's old office on the thirty-ninth floor had been locked since the funeral.
I had kept it that way for two years because I did not want to open his drawers.
On Monday I opened them.
The key was where he had always kept it, taped under the blotter.
The top drawer held pens and a pack of mints.
The bottom drawer held a single envelope with my name on it in his square handwriting.
I sat down in his chair to read it.
"Rafferty. If you are reading this, Thaddeus has made his move, and he has done it with a smile. He always does."
"The Belcher Foundation pays its rent and its favors to a lot of places that do not do charity. Ask what it pays Delancey Street."
"Do not trust any man who helps you before you have asked. I trusted Thaddeus for thirty years, and I never once saw his books."
"You will want to fight him in the boardroom. Fight him with the vote instead."
"Your mother's block and mine are yours, and I never told you why I kept them apart from the rest. Put them somewhere Thaddeus's money cannot lean on."
I read it twice.
My father had never written me a letter in his life, and this was the only one.
It told me nothing about how to love anyone, but it told me what to do on a Monday.
