His Ex Never Left the Family, So I Left the Marriage novel · Chapter 1 of 24

Chapter 1: The Hensley Family

Heather picks up Jason's phone to order soy sauce and finds a family group chat with his ex-wife in it, and the first message was sent on their wedding night.

We were out of soy sauce, so I picked up Jason's phone from the dining table to order some.

Mine was dead on the counter, and the chicken was already in the pan.

Jason was in the shower.

Max was at the other end of the table, chewing his pencil over a page of fractions.

I typed in Jason's code, the same one he used for everything.

A notification slid down from the top of the screen before I could open the grocery app.

The chat was called "The Hensley Family."

I tapped it without thinking.

There were seven people in it.

Jason. His mother. His father. His sister. His sister's husband.

Max.

And Andrea Kirkland, the ex-wife Jason divorced three years ago.

Everyone except me.

The newest message was from Pamela, my mother-in-law.

"Your dad's birthday is Sunday. Bring Andrea and come early. He's been asking about you two all week."

Jason had answered twenty minutes ago.

"Will do. The massage recliner I ordered for Dad gets delivered this afternoon."

Under that, his sister had sent a little eye-roll sticker.

"Great. So I'm hiding my Instagram Stories from Heather again."

I stood very still in my own kitchen.

The chicken started to hiss.

I turned the burner off and kept reading.

Last September I had seen a birthday cake on his sister's Instagram.

Sixty-four candles. His father leaning over them.

I asked Jason about it that night.

He said the family wanted to keep it small, and there was no need for me to drive all the way out there.

I believed him.

I even felt a little grateful, like he'd saved me a long evening.

So it hadn't been about sparing me the trouble.

There just hadn't been a chair for me.

I hit screen record.

Then I scrolled up.

The messages went on and on, and every one of them was a door I hadn't known was closed.

Thanksgiving.

Pamela sent a photo of her dining table with seven place cards.

Andrea's was next to Jason's.

That Thanksgiving, Jason told me his mother had the flu and dinner was off.

He and I ate takeout on the couch, and he was sweet about it.

He'd already eaten turkey at noon.

Christmas Eve.

A picture of Andrea in front of Pamela's tree, holding a mug, wearing the same red sweater as everyone else.

Matching sweaters.

The whole family in a row on the stairs, and Max on Andrea's lap.

Jason had told me Christmas Eve was a quiet church thing for his parents.

I had wrapped Max's presents that night until one in the morning.

I kept going.

Andrea's birthday in March.

Jason wrote, "Happy birthday to Max's mom. We're lucky to have you."

His father gave it a thumbs-up.

His father had never once texted me back.

"Heather?"

I looked up.

Max was watching me over his glasses.

"Is dinner burning?"

"No, buddy. It's fine."

He went back to his fractions.

I looked at his little sandy head, bent over the page.

Then I searched the chat for his name.

A message from April.

"Grandma, can Mom sit with us at my school play? Heather doesn't have to come. She'll just be at work anyway."

Pamela had answered with three hearts.

"Of course, sweetheart. Mom always sits with family."

I had been at that play.

I sat in the back row because Jason said the front was saved for the teachers.

I clapped until my hands hurt.

Max had waved to the front row, and I thought he was waving to his dad.

My thumb was shaking.

I kept scrolling up.

There were photos of a lake house I had never been invited to.

A Fourth of July cookout with Andrea at the grill.

A message from his sister: "Someone remind Jason to delete the pics before he goes home lol."

Jason had replied with a thumbs-up.

Before he goes home.

To me.

The water shut off upstairs.

I heard the bathroom fan, then his bare feet on the floor.

I kept scrolling with my thumb, faster now, back through two years of dinners and holidays and inside jokes.

The chat finally stopped.

There was nothing above the first message.

It was dated June 8, 2024.

Our wedding day.

I had planned every minute of that party in our backyard.

String lights. A taco truck. Max in a tiny bow tie, carrying the rings on a pillow.

The message was sent at 11:52 p.m.

At 11:52 p.m., I was asleep next to Jason in our bed, still wearing my grandmother's pearls.

It was from Jason.

"Okay. It's done. Nothing changes. Andrea is still family and she's still at every dinner. Heather doesn't need to know about this group."
