Chapter 14: Coffee on High Street

Bruce was on the porch when I came out after dark, with Biscuit across his boots and a mug going cold on the rail.

He had changed his shirt twice.

I knew because I had watched him through the kitchen window do it.

"You're nervous," I said.

"I'm not."

"You put the wrong buttons through the wrong holes."

He looked down, swore softly, and fixed it.

I sat on the top step, one stair below him, close enough that my shoulder touched his knee.

Nobody was watching. The nearest house was a mile down the road, and the only audience was a nine-year-old beagle with her eyes shut.

"Okay," Bruce said. "I've been practicing this since the parking lot."

"Practicing."

"In the truck. In the shower. Out loud to Biscuit."

"What did Biscuit say?"

"She fell asleep." He rubbed his jaw. "Leah, would you have coffee with me?"

My throat closed.

I had expected a speech.

I had expected the word wife, or forever, or something about how he was going to make it up to me.

He had asked the plain question again, the one that had been answered for me by a man at a laptop.

"There's a place on High Street," he said, rushing now. "It's bad coffee. The chairs wobble. You'd hate it."

"Bruce."

"You don't have to answer tonight."

"Not yet," I said.

His face did not fall. I watched for it.

He nodded slowly.

"Not yet," he agreed.

"I want to be asked on the twenty-second. After the church. After Travis has nothing left to take credit for." I turned on the step to face him. "If I say yes now, I'll wonder whether I said it because I'm angry at him."
