Agnes tried to put my pale green shawl around me before the last guest had left.
I took it off again.
"We can go upstairs," she whispered.
"You can," I said.
Roderick was still watching Lucan from the doorway.
I didn't want him in the room for the conversation I meant to have.
Elspeth took her cousin's arm and asked him to help her choose tomorrow's wine.
He looked at Lucan once before she led him away.
Winnie began collecting the empty cups, and she took her time about it.
Agnes held out my coat.
"I'm staying in the room," I told her.
She looked at the coat as though it might persuade me better than she could.
Then she fetched my gloves from the sofa and held those out too.
I laid them on the cushion beside me, where she couldn't reach them.
"Those aren't going anywhere either," I said.
