Maxwell sat up slowly and put his back against the headboard.

"Tell me what that means," he said. "All of it, not half."

"You'll think I'm out of my mind."

"Maybe. I'll still be here."

I pulled the quilt up to my chest, and then I made myself put it down.

If I was going to say this, I would say it with nothing held in front of me.

"I'm not twenty-three," I said. "I mean, I am. But I was thirty-seven, four days before I woke up at the diner counter."

He did not move.

"I was married to Calvin for thirteen years, and he died."

I made myself keep going.

"I woke at the counter with a receipt in my hand, and I told no one.

I just started planning how to leave."

The house was very quiet.

A truck went by on the road, far away.

"That's why I knew the gallop in the beagle," I said. "That's why I knew how to keep him upright on the step.

"I did it for four years, in the other life."
