Chapter 22: Remission
The radiologist turned the monitor toward her and let the silence hang for a moment.
It was the second Friday of January, and Esme had not brought gloves.
The infusion floor in New York smelled of coffee and floor wax.
The doctor with the gray braid sat on a rolling stool beside her.
Ezra had driven down at dawn to stand against the wall in his tweed coat.
On the screen was a slice through her liver.
Eight weeks ago she had looked at the same slice and seen a white, ragged coastline.
"Tell me what I'm looking at," Esme said.
"Look first," said the radiologist.
She looked.
The shadow on the right lobe was a smaller, darker thing now, with a soft gray center.
Beside it, where there had been three bright spots, she could find two.
"Dr. Kimball?"
"I'll let her do it," Ezra said hoarsely.
"Partial response," said the doctor.
"Your largest lesion is down forty percent. The center has died. Two of the smaller ones are too small to measure."
