Chapter 10: Not Staff

Beckett crossed the roof slowly, and the guests still left standing moved aside to let him through.

He stopped between Tanya and me.

He did not look at her at all.

"She was never staff," he said.

His voice was not loud.

It reached every phone on that roof anyway.

Tanya laughed, a high, wrecked sound.

"Oh, here we go. What was she, then? Your friend? Your secretary?"

"She was the only person in six years who told me no."

"That's not an answer!"

"It's the one you get." He turned his head, finally, and looked at her with his face shut and cold. "Cora owns forty percent of my company. She earned it before I signed it. I'll say that to anyone who asks, and I'll say it to every person who has ever asked her what she got."

Nobody on the roof moved.

I stood with my hand tight on the cane, and I did not look at him.

I was afraid of what my face would do.

"Your key to Marlowe Tower stops working at midnight," Beckett said to Tanya. "Your car service stopped at noon. Every brand that pays you through my company has been told why. You'll get the rest of your things in a box."

"You promised me!"

"I did, and I broke it. Sue me for it."
