Chapter 24: Eleven Steps

The guard at Halcyon's side door unlocked it for us at seven in the morning and went back to his chair without a word.

The lounge was empty.

The velvet booths had their covers on, and the chandelier was dark.

The marble staircase went up from the middle of the floor, eleven white steps and a brass rail.

I stopped at the bottom.

Beckett stood beside me with a thermos of Nate's coffee and said nothing.

"Why here?" I said.

"I wanted to ask you something at the top."

"You could have asked me in bed."

"I could have. It's a worse story."

I laughed, and the sound went up the staircase and came back.

I hadn't been inside this room since the night I fell.

My hands began to sweat on the cane.

"Tanya pleaded guilty yesterday," Beckett said. "Four years, and a ban on posting anything about anyone. The director took a plea too. Imogen called it the cleanest week she's ever had."

"Good."

"And the lounge is for sale. The owners are tired of it."

I looked at him.

"I haven't bought it," he said quickly. "I thought you might want to."

I thought about it for a long moment.

Then I leaned the cane against the rail.

"What are you doing?" Beckett said.

"I'm going to climb."

"Cora, the hip."

"Is a scar and a yellow patch, and I've had it with being carried." I put my hand on the cold brass. "Stay at the bottom. I'll tell you if I want you."
