Chapter 4: What He Promised

Beckett held the car door open, and I got in because the wind was cold and my hip hurt.

He slid in beside me and told the driver to circle the block.

The glass between us and the front seat went up.

"You promised her the apartment," I said.

"I told her no one would ever put her out unless she wanted to go."

"When?"

"The night I brought her there."

"You said that to a woman you'd known three weeks."

"I said it to all of them," he said, and then stopped, because he had heard it.

I waited.

He rubbed his forehead with two fingers.

"It's what I said so they'd stop asking for more. It was easy. You always dealt with the rest."

"I did."

"So deal with it now. Give her another year. I'll make it a clean exit, quiet, no cameras. She's threatening to put out private messages if we cross her."

"Mine or yours?"

"Mine."

"Then she's bluffing," I said. "Every message you ever sent went through my phone first. I deleted the dangerous ones the same night."

His eyes came up.

"You read them?"

"I read all of them. I was paid to."

He flinched, and I let him.

"Cora, I never meant for that to be your job."

"You never asked what my job was. You asked what it cost."

He was quiet.

The car turned a corner and my cane slid off the seat and onto the floor.
