Chapter 20: Final Hearing
The courtroom was fuller on Monday than I had ever seen a family court.
Word had run through the building after the school gate.
Parents from the pickup line sat in the third row, and two reporters from the legal weekly had notebooks open on their knees.
The judge came in with her glasses on their chain and sat without looking at anyone.
"Ms. Acheson," she said. "I see you've dismissed your counsel."
"I'm representing myself, Your Honor."
"That is your right, and I'll hold you to every rule your lawyers would have." She turned a page. "Call your first witness."
"I call Hallie Tennant."
I walked to the stand for the second time in my life and was sworn in.
Helena rose with a sheaf of glossy prints in one hand.
She looked exhausted, hollow-eyed with fatigue.
"Ms. Tennant," she said. "You live in the respondent's house."
"I do."
"You are still married to Dr. Whitlow."
"Until the divorce is final, yes."
"And you are sleeping with Mr. Acheson."
A ripple went through the benches.
I looked at the judge, and the judge looked back at me, and did not stop me.
"Yes," I said.
"Under the same roof as the child."
