Chapter 4: On Speaker

Stewart didn't shout.

He took the list back from me, folded it once, and put it in his breast pocket.

"Freddie," he said gently, "go and find your trains."

Freddie slid off the stool and went down the hall without looking back.

Stewart waited until the playroom door clicked shut.

Then he turned to me, and his face was the one I'd seen in the rain, the one that belonged to a man who didn't expect to be helped.

"You showed up the day my ex-wife's expert gets named," he said.

"I know how it looks."

"You were in front of my son's clinic. You knew where we'd be."

"I was in front of a crosswalk," I said. "I'd just walked out of a party."

"Convenient."

"My husband's name is Bradley Whitlow," I said. "I put him through fellowship. Last night I watched him kiss a woman in a red coat in his office, and I have never seen your ex-wife in my life."

"You'd say that if you were planted."

"Then I'd be a terrible plant," I said. "I told you my last name and I didn't hide the notebook."

He didn't move.

I took my phone out of my pocket and put it on the island between us.

"Do you want proof?"

"What kind?"

"I'll call him. On speaker. You can listen."

His eyebrows came together.

"He'll know you're not alone."

"He won't," I said. "Bradley has never once imagined that I could have a plan."

I pressed his name and the speaker button.

It rang four times.

"Hallie," Bradley said, in the warm voice he used on parents. "I've been waiting for you."

"Hello, Bradley."

"I assume you're ready to talk like an adult. I've been generous. I haven't told anyone how you embarrassed me last night."

"You haven't had the chance," I said. "I'm calling about work."
