Fah came to the river house on a Saturday in December with a thermos of tom yum and a theory.
"Your gangster has very good teeth," she said, in the kitchen, in a whisper that carried to the garden.
"He's not my gangster."
"He looked at you across a whole dog." She ladled soup into a bowl. "That's the look of a man who has bought a ring and is hiding it in a sock."
"Fah."
"I'm only a scientist describing observable behaviour."
Mee, at the stove, said nothing, and the tips of his ears went red.
Tom, who had decided Fah was a person of quality, lay on her feet.
By sunset she was gone, and the house was quiet.
Pim was upstairs with her feet up, reading about weeks and ounces.
Phat took two bowls of leftover soup out to the dock.
Chak was sitting on the end with his boots off and his feet over the water.
The lamp behind him cast his shadow long across the planks.
The bite on his neck had faded to yellow.
Phat set the bowls down and sat beside him.
