Chapter 16: The Door Open
"The car is at the gate," Chak said. "Mee has the engine running."
Phat looked up from his desk.
It was the thirtieth of December, a little after midnight.
He had been working on a protein folding problem that had nothing to do with anything.
It was the only way to keep from counting the days to the eighth.
Chak stood in the doorway in a loose white shirt that no longer needed a bandage under it.
The wound had closed to a raised pink star below the collarbone.
His hands were empty and hung at his sides.
"Mee will drive you to the dorm," he said. "Or Fah's, or anywhere. The scholarship office opens on the second. I've paid the term fees out of an account Wiroj can't touch, and nobody will ever know it was me."
"What?"
"The eighth is going to be bad." He said it flatly. "The captains are his. Some of them have been his for years. If I lose the vote, he'll take the house and everything in it, and that includes anyone who lives in it. I won't have you in the room when that happens."
"You're sending me away."
