Chapter 18: The Warehouse
Warehouse Seven at Khlong Toei smelled of diesel, rope and river mud.
Forty dockmen and foremen stood in a half circle under the strip lights.
In the middle of them, on a pallet, sat a steel shipping container with its doors open.
Inside it were twenty-two white bricks wrapped in plastic.
Wiroj Lertsiri stood beside it in his grey linen suit with his hands folded, and his face wore deep, courteous grief.
"I take no pleasure in this," he said. "My brother's rule was the first rule I learned at his table. Nothing white on the river. Not a gram, not for any price."
The old men nodded.
Phat stood just inside the door with Pim's cardigan in his arms, because she had refused to stay home.
Mee stood so close to her that nobody could have fit between them.
Chak came down the aisle in a black suit with his collar open and the scar on his chest showing.
The half circle parted for him.
"That's my father's seal," Chak said, looking at the container. "It's been used on forty years of cargo. Anyone who has stood on this dock knows it."
