It was the twenty-ninth of July, three days before the date Phat had circled in red.
The river was black and warm and full of boat lights.
He had turned twenty in June.
Wiroj was in a cell in Bangkwang, and the container had gone to court.
The captains met on the first Sunday of every month in the room above the scales.
They had a tray of fruit, and a brass plate on the back of an empty chair.
The chair was Phat's, officially.
He had sat in it twice, with a textbook, and the captains had learned to wait.
Tonight he sat on the end of the dock with his feet in the water.
The man he loved came down the planks behind him in bare feet, and sat.
"You're late," Phat said.
"I was getting a tattoo."
Phat turned his head.
Chak held out his left wrist.
Beneath the silver rings and above the dragon's tail, in black ink still red at the edges, was one small neat letter in the Roman alphabet.
