Chapter 4: Room Nine

The river house in Nonthaburi was white teak and glass, with a long dock out the back and frangipani trees dropping petals on the lawn.

Room Nine was at the end of the upstairs corridor.

It had a bed with a mosquito net, a desk by the window, and a lock on the door that Phat turned twice.

He did not sleep.

At one in the morning there was a soft knock, and he knew who it was before he opened the door.

Chak leaned in the frame in a black T-shirt and loose trousers, barefoot, his hair wet from a shower.

He did not smile.

"Pim's asleep," he said. "Mee has the gate. Nobody will come up here."

"Then say what you came to say."

"I don't touch my friend's family." Chak's voice was quiet and flat. "Not ever. Not her brother. Not a boy of nineteen she raised by herself. I came to say that, and to say you made a fool of me."

"You said no names."

"You knew mine."

"I found out when you picked up the phone." Phat held the door. "I was going to tell you. Then you kissed me again, and I didn't."

Chak's jaw worked.

"That's honest, at least."

"I'm very honest. It's my worst quality." Phat's pulse was going hard. "One night. No names. Those were your terms. You walked out on them first."

"I walked out while you were asleep."

"Then it was a night," Phat said, "and this is a different one."

Chak looked at him for a very long time.

Then he stepped inside and shut the door and locked it behind him, and Phat's mouth went dry.

He had meant to say something clever.

Chak caught his face in one hand and kissed him against the wood, hard and a little furious.

"I'm not going to touch you," Chak said into his mouth.

"No."

"I mean it."

"I believe you." Phat's hands were already under his T-shirt, careful of the bandage, running over the hard stomach. "Don't."
