Chapter 9: Twelve Days
On Tuesday night it rained, and Eliot drove me home from the newsroom in a dented green Volvo that smelled of old newspapers.
He parked at the curb in front of my duplex and left the engine on for the heater.
The wipers made a slow, squeaking pass across the windshield.
"Okay," he said. "Say it out loud. What do you want from Thursday?"
"I want Tate to say it in front of everybody," I said.
"He won't."
"Then I want everybody to see that he can't," I said.
"That's better." He turned toward me, one arm over the steering wheel. "You can't make a person confess. But you can ask a question he can't answer without lying, in front of three hundred people who all know he's lying."
"What question?"
"I don't know yet."
"That's very helpful, Hendricks."
"I'm the editor. I'm in charge of the facts. You're in charge of the questions."
I laughed.
It was the first time I had laughed all week, and it surprised both of us.
The heater ticked. The rain ran down the glass in long lines.
He had taken his glasses off to wipe them on his sleeve, and without them his eyes looked darker, and tired, and very steady.
He was looking at me.
I looked back.
Neither of us said anything.
I noticed how near his hand was to mine on the console, and how long it had been since anyone had looked at me without wanting something.
He leaned in half an inch.
"Don't look at me like that, Hendricks," I said. "I'm a case study."
