Chapter 19: Her City
On Saturday morning I took Alister to see where I lived.
I had meant to show him in order.
He stood at my front window with a cup of my bad coffee and looked down at Damen Avenue so long that I stopped planning.
"It's loud," he said.
"It's Chicago."
"I like it." He turned. "I didn't think I would."
I walked him to the bakery on the corner.
The woman behind the counter had given me the first-day roll for six years without being asked.
She looked at Alister.
She looked at me.
She put two rolls in the bag and a third on top, and she said, "On the house," in a tone I understood perfectly.
We ate them on a bench by the lake with the wind coming in off the water.
Lake Michigan went to the edge of the sky and showed no far shore.
"That's a lot of water," Alister said.
"You get used to it."
"I'd flood the whole town if it came up like that."
"It doesn't come up. It just sits there," I said.
"I walk here at six every morning before work. Nobody knows my name on this path."
